Mekdela Amba University Apple Research Site – A Living Classroom of Experience.
(August 15/2025 Public and International Relation)
In Mekdela Amba University, Tulu Awliya main compound, 3.5 hectares of land have been dedicated to the research and development of the cool high land climat zone (dega) variety of apples. For the past six consecutive years, the site has been carefully managed using professional agricultural practices.
The Apple Research and Development Center has successfully overcome climate-related challenges, achieving an exceptionally high yield for the second time. This is particularly remarkable because the site is located in the cool high land climate Zone, where the land is degraded and considered unsuitable for various types of fruit production. In an area where many people had lost hope, this work has demonstrated that by rehabilitating and improving the natural environment, such challenges can indeed be overcome—offering valuable lessons and practical experience to the local community.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all who contributed to this achievement—the staff, coordinators, researchers, and technical experts of the center. Your efforts have brought this success, and we encourage you to continue strengthening this work. The Apple Research Site should strive to reach even greater achievements, not only for teaching and community outreach, but also as a recognized center of excellence that produces branded apple product, high-quality apples for the market.
